I have got this writing from Indonesia Halal Directory 2011 by LPPOM MUI, page 22.
Allah has commanded all mankind to consume halal and thoyyib (nutritious) food, and at the same time, He has also prohibited haram (unlawful) food. “Halal” itself comes from Arabic word: “Halla”, means free or released from legal pursuit, anything permitted and allowable to do, and anything free from the danger of life here in this world, and hereafter. So, halal food is the food consuming with no legal pursuit, nor sin according to Islamic teaching, and neither torture hereafter, and even anybody consuming halal food will be rewarded a good merit by Allah. And reversely, “Haram” means unlawful or prohibited by Allah. Anyone breaks this stipulation will be tortured by Allah hereafter, and sometime he can also be punished in accordance with Shariah, the Islamic law, here, in this world.
The command to consume halal food can be paralleled with the command for Taqwa or piety to Allah and it has been stated explicity in Quranic verse, which meant as follow:
QS. Al-Baqarah: 168 (“O mankind, eat from whatever is on earth [that is] lawful and good and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Indeed, he is to you a clear enemy.”)
QS. Al-Maidah: 88 (“And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.”)
Consuming halal food which is based on the true beleive and nerely piety to Allah and following His comand is Ibadah or devotion to Allah, which is turn, will be properly rewarded a good merit by Allah here, in this world and hereafter. And reversely, eating haram food and moreover it is followed by disobedience conduct to the stipulation of Allah, is a sin and wickednens, vilation of God’s law, and hence, it will be punished by a tortune in the Hellfire.
The command to consume halal food can be parralled with the command for Taqwa or piety to Allah, and it has been stated explicity in Quranic verse.
QS. Al-Maidah: 88 (“And eat of what Allah has provided for you [which is] lawful and good. And fear Allah, in whom you are believers.”
There are many Quranic verses mentioning haram or lawful food for Muslim consumption. Among them are as follows:
QS. Al-Baqarah: 173 (“He has only forbidden to you dead animals, blood, the flesh of swine, and that which has been dedicated to other than Allah.”
QS. Al-Baqarah: 219
QS. An0Nisa: 43
QS. Al-Maidah: 3 – 4
QS. Al- An’am: 121
QS. An-Nahl: 67
QS. Al-Isra: 70
While the haram or unlawful food/animals mentioned in Hadist by our Prophet, Muhammad, are filth animalsm the animal(s) living in two natures, the animal which is forbidden to kill (such as ants and bees), wild animal, the animal with canine tooth, the bird with claw, and (flesh of) donkey.
Although the haram, unlawful foods are very few, but in accordance with the advance science and technology, particularly in food, there are many processing and fabricating food using various additives which their halal status are not clear, and hence, the halal status of the product are syubhat (doubtful according to Islamic Shariah). Therefore, to make them clear on the Halal status, there must be halal certification by Fatwa committee of MUI based on the result of study and comprehensive audit by LPPOM MUI.
